RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of cariogenic challenge on the bond strength of adhesive systems to sound and artificially demineralized enamel of primary and permanent teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty molars (40 primary, 40 permanent) were randomly assigned to 16 groups (n = 5) according to the type of tooth (primary [PRIM] or permanent [PERM]), enamel condition (sound [S] or demineralized [DEM]), treatment after the restorative procedure (control [C] or cariogenic challenge [pH]), and adhesive system (Adper Single Bond [SB] or Clearfil SE Bond [SE]). Teeth from the DEM group were subjected to cariogenic challenge by pH cycling prior to restorative procedures and pH group specimens were subjected to cariogenic challenge before the microshear test. One of two adhesive systems was applied to the flat enamel surfaces and composite cylinders (0.45 mm2) were built. The microshear bond test was performed. The data (MPa) were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: No statistically significant differences were detected between the adhesive systems. The S groups exhibited higher bond strength values than the DEM groups, as did C groups compared to pH groups. PERM groups also had higher bond strength values than PRIM groups, excluding PRIM S and PERM S, which had similar values. CONCLUSION: The bond strength to demineralized enamel of primary teeth was lower than to the demineralized enamel of permanent teeth. Cariogenic challenge negatively influenced enamel bond strength, regardless of the type of tooth and adhesive system.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effect of air temperature (warm or cold) for solvent evaporation on bonding and nanoleakage of self-etching adhesives to dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The adhesives Clearfil 3S Bond [S3], OptiBond All-In-One [OB], Adper SE Plus [AD], and Silorane adhesive [SI] were applied on dentin surfaces, and a warm (60 ± 2°C) or cold air (20 ± 1°C) was applied and light-cured. After water storage (24 h), the teeth were sectioned into sticks (0.8 mm(2)) and tested in tensile. Then, they were immersed in a 50% solution of silver nitrate, photo-developed and the nanoleakage observed in a scanning electron microscope. The bond strength and nanoleakage pattern were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's test (α =0.05). RESULTS: Higher bond strength and lower silver nitrate uptake were observed for the adhesives under warm condition (P < 0.05). AD and SI showed better adhesive results than S3 and OB (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The use of a warm air was useful to improve the bonding and diminish the nanoleakage of adhesive systems to dentin.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of the combined use of chlorhexidine and ethanol on the durability of resin-dentin bonds. METHODS: Forty-eight flat dentin surfaces were etched (32% phosphoric acid), rinsed (15 s) and kept wet until bonding procedures. Dentin surfaces were blot-dried with absorbent paper and re-wetted with water (water, control), 1% chlorhexidine diacetate in water (CHD/water), 100% ethanol (ethanol), or 1% chlorhexidine diacetate in ethanol (CHD/ethanol) solutions for 30 s. They were then bonded with All Bond 3 (AB3, Bisco) or Excite (EX, Ivoclar-Vivadent) using a smooth, continuous rubbing application (10 s), followed by 15 s gentle air stream to evaporate solvents. The adhesives were light-cured (20 s) and resin composite build-ups constructed for the microtensile method. Bonded beams were obtained and tested after 24-h, 6-months and 15-months of water storage at 37°C. Storage water was changed every month. Effects of treatment and testing periods were analyzed (ANOVA, Holm-Sidak, p<0.05) for each adhesive. RESULTS: There were no interactions between factors for both etch-and-rinse adhesives. AB3 was significantly affected only by storage (p=0.003). Excite was significantly affected only by treatments (p=0.048). AB3 treated either with ethanol or CHD/ethanol resulted in reduced bond strengths after 15 months. The use of CHD/ethanol resulted in higher bond strengths values for Excite. CONCLUSIONS: Combined use of ethanol/1% chlorhexidine diacetate did not stabilize bond strengths after 15 months.

This in vitro study evaluated the influence of two devices for application of shear load in microshear tests on bond strength and fracture pattern of primary enamel and dentin. Eighty primary molars were selected and flat enamel (40 teeth sectioned mesio-distally) and dentin (40 teeth sectioned transversally) surfaces were obtained. Both surfaces were polished to standardize the smear layer. Two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive systems (Adper Single Bond and XP Bond) were used. Polyethylene tubes was placed over the bonded surfaces and filled with composite resin. The microshear testing was performed after storage in water (24 h/37 °C) using two devices for application of microshear loads: a notched rod (Bisco Shear Bond Tester) or a knife edge (Kratos Industrial Equipment). Failure modes were evaluated using a stereomicroscope. Bond strength data were subjected to ANOVA and chi-square test to compare the failure mode distributions (α=0.05). No significant differences were observed between the groups for dentin and enamel bond strength or fracture patterns (p>0.05). The predominant failure mode was adhesive/mixed. In conclusion, the devices for application of shear loads did not influence the bond strength values, regardless of adhesive system and substrate.


Este estudo in vitro avaliou a influência de dois dispositivos para aplicação de força de cisalhamento em testes de resistência de união ao microcisalhamento e no padrão de fratura em dentina e esmalte de dentes decíduos. Oitenta molares decíduos foram selecionados e superficies planas em esmalte (40 dentes seccionados no sentido mésio-distal) e dentina (40 dentes seccionados transversalmente) foram obtidas. Ambas as superficies foram abrasionadas para padronização da lama dentinária. Dois sistemas adesivos de condicionamento ácido prévio (Adper Single Bond e XP Bond) foram utilizados. Tubos de polietileno foram colocados sobre as superficies, nas quais já haviam sido aplicados os sistemas adesivos, e preenchidos com resina composta. O teste de resistência de união ao microcisalhamento foi realizado após armazenamento dos espécimes em água (24 h/37 °C) utilizando dois dispositivos para a aplicação das forças de cisalhamento: cisalha côncava (Bisco Shear Bond Tester) e cisalha plana (Kratos Industrial Equipment). O padrão de fratura foi avaliado usando estereomicroscópio. Os dados de resistência de união foram submetidos à ANOVA e o teste quiquadrado foi utilizado para comparar a distribuição dos padrões de fratura (α=0,05). Não foram observadas diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre os grupos, tanto para a resistência de união a dentina e esmalte quanto para o padrão de fratura (p>0,05). O modo de falha predominante foi adesiva/mista. Em conclusão, os dispositivos para aplicação de força de cisalhamento não influenciam os valores de resistência de união, independente do sistema adesivo e substrato.

PURPOSE: To examine the microtensile bond strengths (microTBS) of six 1-step and one 2-step self-etch systems to dentin and ground enamel. METHODS: Resin composite buildups were bonded to buccal and lingual ground enamel surfaces, and to occlusal dentin of third molars using the following 1-step adhesives: Xeno IV (XE), GBond (GB), Clearfil S3 Bond (CS3); Adper Prompt L-Pop (AD); Go (GO) and All Bond SE (1-step; ABSE), in comparison to the 2-steps (All Bond SE; (2-step ABSE) and Clearfil SE Bond (CSE). After storage in water (24 hour/37 degrees C), the bonded specimens were sectioned into beams approximately 0.9 mm2. These beams were tested until failure at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/minute. Data were subjected to appropriate statistical analysis (alpha = 0.05). RESULTS: The total number of specimens/premature debonding specimens (PDS) for each adhesive were, respectively, in enamel: XE (59/36), GB (63/33), CS3 (62/29), AD (47/19), GO (53/14), 1-step ABSE (61/29), 2-step ABSE (57/14) and CSE (58/13); and in dentin: XE (51/24), GB (50/7), CS3 (53/13), ADP (51/1), GO (43/8), 1-step ABSE (59/2), 1-step ABSE (56/0) and CSE (47/0). The fracture pattern was predominantly adhesive/mixture for all adhesives in dentin (51.5 to 99%) and in enamel (34.8 to 75.4%), however XE (61.2) and GB (52.5) had more than 50% PDS. For ground enamel, no significant difference was detected among materials in the same subgroup (with or without PDS). However, there was a significant difference for all adhesives when subgroups (with and without PDS, respectively) were tested against each other: XE (7.9/10.5 double dagger 19.7/5.5), GB (8.6/10.5 double dagger 17.2/7.4), CS3 (8.8/10.3 double dagger 15.7/5.6), AD (13.0/12.0 = 20.3/8.9), Go (18.2/13.8 = 25.1/10.0), 1-step ABSE (15.9/11.4 = 16.2/5.4), 2-step ABSE (8.4/9.1 double dagger 25.3/7.9) and CSE (17.6/16.3 = 19.9/7.8). For dentin, no difference was found when subgroups for the same adhesive were tested against each other (with or without PDS). However, significantly higher resin-dentin bond strength was observed for adhesives in the following order: CSE (38.5/6.5 = 38.5/6.5) > or = 2-step ABSE (41.4/16.3 double dagger 42.4/19.3) = 1-step ABSE (43.9/17.7 = 44.2/17.1) = AD (34.4/14.2 = 35.2/13.3) < or = CS3 (31.9/19.4 = 40.1/13.4) double dagger GB (14.3/6.3 = 16.3/5.9) = Go (14.2/13.9 = 22.4/12.6) double dagger XE (7.1/5.4 = 9.5/5.1), respectively for with PDS and without PDS. All materials showed similar performance on ground enamel. The performance of one-step self-etch systems to dentin appears to be material-dependent. Adper Prompt L-Pop, Clearfil S3 Bond and the 1-step All Bond SE had microTBS similar to Clearfil SE Bond and the 2-step All Bond SE, while Xeno IV and GBond had significantly lower microTBS values. Go had an intermediate performance.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of application time on the resin-dentin bond strength (µTBS) and etching pattern of adhesive systems applied on sclerotic dentine. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of forty-two bovine incisors had their roots removed. The 1-step self-etch GO (SDI), the 2-step self-etch Adper SE Bond (3MESPE) and the 35% phosphoric acid (3MESPE) from the 2-step etch-and-rinse Adper Single Bond 2 (3MESPE) were applied on the bovine incisal surfaces according to the manufacturer's instructions or duplicating the recommended conditioning time. After adhesive application, thirty teeth were restored with composite resin, stored for 24 h in distilled water at 37°C, and sectioned into resin-dentin bonded sticks (0.8 mm²) and tested according to the µTBS at 0.5 mm/min. The etching pattern of the remaining twelve teeth (n=4 for each material) was examined under scanning electron microscopy. Each tooth was divided into a buccal-to-lingual direction into three thirds, and each third randomly assigned to the groups: control (no treatment), according to the manufacturers' instructions and duplicating the recommended application time. The µTBS and the relative percentage of the tubule area opening were evaluated by two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey's tests (α=0.05). RESULTS: The duplication of the conditioning time favored only the GO adhesive (p<0.05). Both application methods significantly increased the tubule area opening (p<0.05) compared to the controls. CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy of duplicating the conditioning time was only effective for the 1-step self-etch adhesive system tested.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the micro-tensile bond strength of methacrylate resin systems to a silorane-based restorative system on dentin after 24 hours and six months water storage. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The restorative systems Adper Single Bond 2/Filtek Z350 (ASB), Clearfil SE Bond/Z350 (CF), Adper SE Plus/Z350 (ASEP) and P90 Adhesive System/Filtek P90 (P90) were applied on flat dentin surfaces of 20 third molars (n=5). The restored teeth were sectioned perpendicularly to the bonding interface to obtain sticks (0.8 mm2) to be tested after 24 hours (24 h) and 6 months (6 m) of water storage, in a universal testing machine at 0.5 mm/min. The data was analyzed via two-way Analysis of Variance/Bonferroni post hoc tests at 5% global significance. RESULTS: Overall outcomes did not indicate a statistical difference for the resin systems (p=0.26) nor time (p=0.62). No interaction between material × time was detected (p=0.28). Mean standard-deviation in MPa at 24 h and 6 m were: ASB 31.38 (4.53) and 30.06 (1.95), CF 34.26 (3.47) and 32.75 (4.18), ASEP 29.54 (4.14) and 33.47 (2.47), P90 30.27 (2.03) and 31.34 (2.19). CONCLUSIONS: The silorane-based system showed a similar performance to methacrylate-based materials on dentin. All systems were stable in terms of bond strength up to 6 month of water storage.

Little is known about the effect of specimen preparation and testing protocols on the micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) results. To evaluate whether variations in polyethylene rod use affect (µSBS)). Human dentin disks were randomly distributed into six groups (n = 5): polyethylene tube (3 levels) and adhesive system (2 levels). In Group 1, polyethylene tubes filled with polymerized composite) were placed on adhesive covered surfaces. Tubes were removed 24 h after water storage, leaving the rods only. In Group 2, the same procedure was performed; however, tubes were kept in place during testing. In Group 3, composite rods without tubes were placed on adhesive covered dentin. In all groups, adhesives were photoactivated after positioning filled tubes/rods on adhesive covered surfaces. Specimens were tested under shear mode and the data subjected to a two-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests. Groups 1 and 2 resulted in statistically similar mean µSBS (P > 0.05); however, a greater number of pretest failures were observed for Group 1. Higher µSBS values were detected for Group 3, irrespective of adhesive system used (P < 0.05). Removing the polyethylene tube before composite rod is placed on dentin affects µSBS values.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of microstructure and composition of basic alloys on their microshear bond strength (µSBS) to resin luting cement. The alloys used were: Supreme Cast-V (SC), Tilite Star (TS), Wiron 99 (W9), VeraBond II (VBII), VeraBond (VB), Remanium (RM) and IPS d.SIGN 30 (IPS). Five wax patterns (13mm in diameter and 4mm height) were invested, and cast in a centrifugal casting machine for each basic alloy. The specimens were embedded in resin, polished with a SiC paper and sandblasted. After cleaning the metal surfaces, six tygon tubes (0.5 mm height and 0.75 mm in diameter) were placed on each alloy surface, the resin cement (Panavia F) was inserted, and the excess was removed before light-curing. After storage (24 h/37°C), the specimens were subjected to µSBS testing (0.5 mm/min). The data were subjected to a one-way repeated measures analysis of variance and Turkey's test (α=0.05). After polishing, their microstructures were revealed with specific conditioners. The highest µSBS (mean/standard deviation in MPa) were observed in the alloys with dendritic structure, eutectic formation or precipitation: VB (30.6/1.7), TS (29.8/0.9), SC (30.6/1.7), with the exception of IPS (31.1/0.9) which showed high µSBS but no eutectic formation. The W9 (28.1/1.5), VBII (25.9/2.0) and RM (25.9/0.9) showed the lowest µSBS and no eutectic formation. It seems that alloys with eutectic formation provide the highest µSBS values when bonded to a light-cured resin luting cement.


O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência da microestrutura e da composição de ligas básicas quanto à resistência de união (RU) a um agente cimentante resinoso. Foram usadas as seguintes ligas: Supreme Cast-V (SC), Tilite Star (TS), Wiron 99 (W9), VeraBond II (VBII), VeraBond (VB), Remanium (RM) and IPS d.SIGN 30 (IPS). Cinco padrões em cera (13 mm de diâmetro e 4 mm de altura) para cada uma das ligas básicas foram incluídos e fundidos em uma máquina de fundição. As amostras foram então embutidas em resina, polidas com lixas e jateadas. Após a limpeza das superfícies, seis cilindros de tygon tube (0,5 mm de altura e 0,75 mm de diâmetro) foram colocados sobre a superficie da liga e preenchida com cimento resinoso (Panavia F), o excesso foi removido antes da fotoativação. Após armazenagem (24 h/37ºC), cada amostra foi ensaiada por microcisalhamento a 0,5 mm/min. Os dados foram tratados por análise de variância para e medidas repetidas e teste Tukey (α=0,05). Para avaliar a microesturutura, as mesmas amostras foram polidas e condicionadas com solução específica. Os valores mais altos da RU (média/desvio padrão em MPa) foram encontrados para as ligas com estrutura dendrítica, formação eutética e precipitados: VB (30,6/1,7), TS (29,8/0,9), SC (30,6/1,7), com exceção da IPS (31,1/0,9) que apresentou alto valor de RU, mas sem formação eutética. As ligas W9 (28,1/1,5), VBII (25,9/2,0) and RM (25,9/0,9) apresentaram os menores valores de RU e ausência de formação eutética. Pode-se inferir que os valores mais elevados de resistência de união ao cimento resinoso fotoativado ocorre com as ligas que apresentam formação de eutético.

Two Ni-Cr alloys, Co-Cr and Pd-Ag were used. The casting conditions were as follows: electromagnetic induction under argon atmosphere, vacuum, using blowtorch without atmosphere control. For each condition, 16 specimens, each measuring 25 mm long and 2.5 mm in diameter, were obtained. Ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (EL) tests were performed using a Kratos machine. Vickers Microhardness (VM), fracture mode and microstructure were analyzed by SEM. UTS, EL and VM data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA. For UTS, alloy composition had a direct influence on casting condition of alloys (Wiron 99 and Remanium CD), with higher values shown when cast with Flame/Air (p < 0.05). The factors 'alloy" and 'casting condition" influenced the EL and VM results, generally presenting opposite results, i.e., alloy with high elongation value had lower hardness (Wiron 99), and casting condition with the lowest EL values had the highest VM values (blowtorch). Both factors had significant influence on the properties evaluated, and prosthetic laboratories should select the appropriate casting method for each alloy composition to obtain the desired property.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the tensile strength, elongation, microhardness (MHV), composition and microstructure of two Ni-Cr based alloy, cast under different casting conditions. METHODS: Before casting, the alloy ingots were evaluated as regards composition (EDX) and microstructure (Optical microscopy, SEM and EDX). The casting conditions were as follows: electromagnetic induction in an environment controlled with argon (EWA), electromagnetic induction in an environment under vacuum (EWV), electromagnetic induction without atmosphere control (EWNC) and blowtorch (BT). For each condition, 16 specimens were obtained, each measuring 25 mm high and 2.5mm in diameter. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (EL) tests were performed in a Kratos machine (1.0mm/min). Fractured specimens were embedded in bakelite resin and polished for Vickers Microhardness analysis (1000 g/10s) with 4 penetrations in each specimen. The UTS, EL and MHV results were evaluated for two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). RESULTS: The cross-product interaction was statistically significant for all properties evaluated (p<0.0001), lower UTS, VHN and high elongation means were observed for the Ni-Cr-Mo-Be alloy tested when cast under the induction/argon (p<0.05). Higher UTS means were found for Ni-Cr-Mo-Ti alloy tested when cast under the induction/vacuum, and induction/air and flame/air condition (p<0.05). The two alloys show a microstructure with a dendritic formation with the presence of eutectic presence. CONCLUSION: The Ni-Cr-Mo-Ti alloy showed high UTS, MHV and lowest EL comparaded with the tradicional Ni-Cr-Mo-Be, that show lowest UTS, MHV and higher EL when cast on induction/argon.

The aim of this study was to assess, using the DPPH assay, the antioxidant activity of several substances that could be proposed to immediately revert the problems caused by bleaching procedures. The percentage of antioxidant activity (AA%) of 10% ascorbic acid solution (AAcidS), 10% ascorbic acid gel (AAcidG), 10% sodium ascorbate solution (SodAsS), 10% sodium ascorbate gel (SodAsG), 10% sodium bicarbonate (Bicarb), Neutralize(®) (NE), Desensibilize(®) (DES), catalase C-40 at 10 mg/mL (CAT), 10% alcohol solution of alpha-tocopherol (VitE), Listerine(®) (LIS), 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX), Croton Lechleri (CL), 10 % aqueous solution of Uncaria Tomentosa (UT), artificial saliva (ArtS) and 0.05% sodium fluoride (NaF) was assessed in triplicate by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) free radical assay. All substances exhibited antioxidant activity, except for CL. AAcidS, AAcidG and VitE exhibited the highest AA% (p<0.05). On the contrary, CHX, NE, LIS and NaF showed the lowest AA% (p<0.05). In conclusion, AAcidS, AAcidG, SodAsS, SodAsG and VitE presented the highest antioxidant activity among substances tested in this study. The DPPH assay provides an easy and rapid way to evaluate potential antioxidants.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of microstructure and composition of basic alloys on their microshear bond strength (µSBS) to resin luting cement. The alloys used were: Supreme Cast-V (SC), Tilite Star (TS), Wiron 99 (W9), VeraBond II (VBII), VeraBond (VB), Remanium (RM) and IPS d.SIGN 30 (IPS). Five wax patterns (13 mm in diameter and 4mm height) were invested, and cast in a centrifugal casting machine for each basic alloy. The specimens were embedded in resin, polished with a SiC paper and sandblasted. After cleaning the metal surfaces, six tygon tubes (0.5 mm height and 0.75 mm in diameter) were placed on each alloy surface, the resin cement (Panavia F) was inserted, and the excess was removed before light-curing. After storage (24 h/37°C), the specimens were subjected to µSBS testing (0.5 mm/min). The data were subjected to a one-way repeated measures analysis of variance and Turkey's test (α=0.05). After polishing, their microstructures were revealed with specific conditioners. The highest µSBS (mean/standard deviation in MPa) were observed in the alloys with dendritic structure, eutectic formation or precipitation: VB (30.6/1.7), TS (29.8/0.9), SC (30.6/1.7), with the exception of IPS (31.1/0.9) which showed high µSBS but no eutectic formation. The W9 (28.1/1.5), VBII (25.9/2.0) and RM (25.9/0.9) showed the lowest µSBS and no eutectic formation. It seems that alloys with eutectic formation provide the highest µSBS values when bonded to a light-cured resin luting cement.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar, por meio do DPPH, a atividade antioxidante de substâncias que poderiam ser propostas para reverter de imediato os problemas causados pelos procedimentos de clareamento. A porcentagem de atividade antioxidante (AA por cento) da solução de acido ascórbico 10 por cento (AAcidS), gel de ácido ascórbico a 10 por cento (AAcidG), solução de ascorbato de sódio 10 por cento (SodAsS), gel de ascorbato de sódio 10 por cento (SodAsG), bicarbonato de sódio 10 por cento (Bicarb), Neutralize® (NE), Desensibilize® (DES), catalase C-40 10 mg/mL (CAT), solução alcoólica 10 por cento de alfa-tocoferol (VitE), Listerine® (LIS), clorexidina 0,12 por cento (CHX), CrotonLechleri (CL), solução aquosa 10 por cento de Uncaria Tomentosa (UT), saliva artificial (ArtS) e fluoreto de sódio 0,05 por cento (NaF) foi avaliada em triplicata pelo teste de radicais livres 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH). Todas as substâncias apresentaram atividade antioxidante, exceto a CL. AAcidS, AAcidG e VitE mostraram os maiores valores de AA por cento (p<0,05). Por outro lado, CHX, NE, LIS e NaF mostraram os valores mais baixos de AA por cento (p<0,05). Em conclusão, AAcidS, AAcidG, SodAsS, SodAsG e VitE apresentaram os mais altos valores de atividade antioxidante entre as substâncias testadas. O teste DPPH é um método rápido e fácil para avaliar o potencial antioxidante.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of dentin moisture on bond strengths of an etch-and-rinse bonding agent to primary dentin clinically and in the laboratory. METHODS: The sample consisted of two groups of 20 caries-free primary second molars: molars in exfoliation period (clinical group) and extracted molars (laboratory group). Class I cavities were prepared in all specimens leaving a flat dentin surface on the pulpal floor. A two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive was vigorously rubbed on either dry (n = 5) or wet demineralized dentin (n = 5) under clinical or laboratory conditions. After restorative procedures, the teeth from the clinical group were extracted after 20 minutes. All samples were processed and underwent microtensile bond strength test and silver nitrate uptake evaluation under scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: Statistically higher bond strength values were observed when the bonding was performed under laboratory conditions and on a wet demineralized dentin. Most of the failures were adhesive and mixed irrespective of the experimental condition. Silver nitrate uptake occurred in all groups irrespective of the experimental condition. Resin-dentin bond strengths produced in the laboratory in primary teeth may overestimate those produced under clinical circumstances.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the pH over a period of 168 h and the ionic silver content in various concentrations and post-preparation times of aqueous silver nitrate solutions. Also, the possible effects of these factors on microleakage test in adhesive/resin restorations in primary and permanent teeth were evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A digital pHmeter was used for measuring the pH of the solutions prepared with three types of water (purified, deionized or distilled) and three brands of silver nitrate salt (Merck, Synth or Cennabras) at 0, 1, 2, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 168 h after preparation, and storage in transparent or dark bottles. Ionic silver was assayed according to the post-preparation times (2, 24, 48, 72, 96, 168 h) and concentrations (1, 5, 25, 50%) of solutions by atomic emission spectrometry. For each sample of each condition, three readings were obtained for calculating the mean value. Class V cavities were prepared with enamel margins on primary and permanent teeth and restored with the adhesive systems OptiBond FL or OptiBond SOLO Plus SE and the composite resin Filtek Z-250. After nail polish coverage, the permanent teeth were immersed in 25% or 50% AgNO3 solution and the primary teeth in 5% or 50% AgNO3 solutions for microleakage evaluation. ANOVA and the Tukey's test were used for data analyses (α=5%). RESULTS: The mean pH of the solutions ranged from neutral to alkaline (7.9±2.2 to 11.8±0.9). Mean ionic silver content differed depending on the concentration of the solution (4.75±0.5 to 293±15.3 ppm). In the microleakage test, significant difference was only observed for the adhesive system factor (p=0.000). CONCLUSIONS: Under the tested experimental conditions and based on the obtained results, it may be concluded that the aqueous AgNO3 solutions: have neutral/alkaline pH and service life of up to 168 h; the level of ionic silver is proportional to the concentration of the solution; even at 5% concentration, the solutions were capable of indicating loss of marginal seal in the composite restorations; the 3-step conventional adhesive system had better performance regarding microleakage in enamel on primary and permanent teeth.
